Route Overview
The Inner Basin Trail circles the inner basin of the San Francisco Peaks - a large cirque carved by ancient glaciers between Humphreys Peak, Agassiz Peak, and Fremont Peak. The trail passes through some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in Arizona: dense stands of quaking aspen, wildflower-filled meadows, and lush riparian areas along Lockett Meadow Creek.
The 8-mile loop is typically done as a day hike from the Lockett Meadow trailhead. The trail is well-maintained and moderately graded, making it accessible to hikers with some experience. The high elevation (9,500-11,000 feet) adds challenge, but the terrain is not technical.
Fall (late September to mid-October) is the most popular season, when the aspen groves turn brilliant gold against the dark volcanic peaks. Summer offers wildflowers and cool temperatures at elevation. Winter access is limited by snow.
Route Description
Trailhead: The Inner Basin Trail begins at the Lockett Meadow trailhead, accessible via Forest Road 552 from US-180 north of Flagstaff. The road passes through the Arizona Snowbowl ski area. Lockett Meadow has a developed campground and parking area. During peak fall colors season, the road may have limited parking or shuttle requirements.
Lower Loop: The trail follows Lockett Meadow Creek through a lush riparian corridor. Dense stands of aspen, alder, and willow line the creek. The initial miles are relatively flat with gentle grades. You'll cross the creek several times on well-built bridges.
Upper Basin: As the trail climbs into the upper basin, the forest opens up and you gain views of the surrounding peaks. The trail passes through expansive meadows that are spectacular in summer when wildflowers bloom. The grade becomes moderate as you climb toward the saddle between the peaks.
Return: The loop can be completed in either direction. The clockwise direction provides a more gradual ascent to the upper basin. The trail reconnects with the lower section to complete the loop back to Lockett Meadow.
Permits & Regulations
Permit Required: No. No permits are required for day use on the Inner Basin Trail.
Camping: Lockett Meadow Campground is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Dispersed camping is allowed in Coconino National Forest following standard regulations. Camping is not permitted in the Inner Basin itself to protect the fragile alpine environment.
Sacred Land: The San Francisco Peaks are sacred to multiple Native American tribes. Respect the cultural significance of this area - stay on designated trails and do not disturb any features.
Fall Colors Season: Late September through mid-October draws large crowds. Arrive early for parking. The Forest Service may implement shuttle service during peak weekends.
Water & Conditions
- Water Sources: Lockett Meadow Creek provides reliable water throughout the hiking season. Filter or treat before drinking.
- Trail Conditions: The trail is generally well-maintained. Snow may linger on upper sections until late June or early July. Fall conditions are typically the best, with stable weather and dry trails.
- Wildlife: The area supports elk, mule deer, and diverse bird species. Elk are common in Lockett Meadow, especially at dawn and dusk. Maintain a safe distance.
- Altitude: The trailhead is at approximately 9,500 feet. Altitude effects are possible, especially for visitors from lower elevations. Acclimate gradually and stay hydrated.
