Route Overview

Mazatzal Peak is the highest point in the Mazatzal Wilderness at 7,903 feet. The trail climbs through diverse terrain - from Sonoran Desert scrub at the trailhead, through oak and pine woodland, to the summit ridge with panoramic views of central Arizona. The Mazatzals are less visited than the Superstitions but offer equally dramatic scenery and true wilderness solitude.

The trail is well-maintained and moderately graded. Water sources are limited - carry all water needed for the hike. The summit offers 360-degree views of the surrounding wilderness, the Verde Valley, and beyond.
