Clothing
The right clothing adapts to changing conditions - wet or dry, active or resting, wind or calm, cold or warm.
Clothing in the backcountry is not about fashion - it is about survival and comfort. The right layers manage moisture, trap heat, and protect you from wind and rain. The wrong clothing - especially cotton - can become a liability the moment conditions change.
Your body loses heat four ways: conduction (direct contact with cold surfaces), convection (air or water moving across your skin), radiation (heat radiating away from your body), and evaporation (sweat or moisture drying and cooling your skin). Every clothing decision should address one or more of these.
Modern outdoor clothing has evolved dramatically. Stretchy nylon-spandex blends have replaced stiff fabrics. PFAS-free DWR coatings are replacing traditional waterproofing. Sun protection clothing with UPF ratings is now standard. And ultralight rain jackets weighing just 5 ounces offer protection that would have been impossible a decade ago.
The goal is a system that adapts. You will be active and resting, in wind and calm, in cold and warmth - sometimes within the same hour. Layers let you adjust without carrying a separate outfit for every scenario.
The Layering System
Three layers working together. Each has a job. Skip one and the system breaks down.
Base Layer
The layer against your skin. Its job is to wick sweat away and keep you dry. Moisture on your skin steals heat faster than cold air.
- Synthetic or wool - never cotton
- Should fit snugly against the skin
- Lightweight for high-output activity, midweight for cooler temps
- A fresh base layer at camp keeps you warm and dry
Mid Layer
The insulation layer. Its job is to trap body heat. This is where warmth lives - fleece, down, or synthetic fill.
- Fleece for active insulation - breathes while you move
- Down puffy for camp and cold rest stops - maximum warmth, minimum weight
- Synthetic insulated jacket for wet conditions - retains warmth when damp
- Carry both a light fleece and a warmer puffy for variable conditions
Outer Layer
The shell. Its job is to block wind and rain while letting sweat vapor escape. Without a shell, your insulation gets wet and loses its ability to keep you warm.
- Waterproof-breathable membrane (Gore-Tex, Pertex Shield, or brand-specific membranes)
- Sealed seams to keep water out
- Pit zips or ventilation for dumping heat during exertion
- Carry it even on clear mornings - storms arrive without warning
Active Layers: Windbreakers & Sun Protection
Not everything fits neatly into the three-layer system. Two categories have become essential for modern backpackers:
Windbreakers
Lightweight, breathable, and packable. Unlike rain jackets, windbreakers do not have waterproof membranes - so they breathe far better during activity. They cut the chill during infrequent rainstorms and dry out quickly.
- Best as an active layer during hiking
- Weighs 3-8 oz and packs to the size of a fist
- Many hikers wear a windbreaker instead of a rain jacket while moving, saving the rain shell for camp or storms
Sun Protection Clothing
Long-sleeve sun shirts and pants with UPF ratings (30-50+) protect against UV without sunscreen. Though it sounds counterintuitive, long sleeves keep you cooler in hot sun by blocking radiation.
- Lightweight, breathable fabrics with UPF 30-50+ ratings
- Sun hoodies with built-in hoods and thumb loops are now popular
- Replace multiple layers: sun shirt + windbreaker in one piece
Fabrics & Insulators
Insulation works by trapping air. The fabrics you choose determine how well that trapped air stays warm, dry, and effective. The wrong fabric - cotton - traps moisture and chills you from the inside.
Wool
Warm when wet, odor-resistant, and naturally temperature-regulating. Merino wool base layers are the gold standard for multi-day trips.
Synthetics (Poly)
Lightweight, quick-drying, and affordable. Wicks moisture effectively. The workhorse of base layers and active insulation.
Stretch Nylon Blends
Nylon-spandex or nylon-elastane blends are now the standard for hiking pants and softshell jackets. They offer durability, stretch, and quick-drying performance. Look for DWR coating for water resistance.
Cotton
Avoid it. Cotton retains moisture, chills your body, and dries slowly. In cold or wet conditions, cotton clothing is a serious safety risk.
Fills & Shells
What goes inside your insulation and what wraps around it - the materials that make or break your outer layers.
Insulation Fills
The material inside your puffy jacket that traps heat. Down is rated by fill power (650-1000+), with higher numbers meaning better warmth-to-weight ratio.
- Down: excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, highly compressible. Loses insulation when wet unless treated with hydrophobic coating. Premium bags use 800-950+ fill power.
- Synthetic: retains warmth when wet, dries faster, less expensive. Slightly bulkier and heavier than down. Brands like PrimaLoft and Coreloft lead the category.
- Hybrid insulation: many premium jackets now combine down in dry zones with synthetic in moisture-prone areas (shoulders, cuffs). Best of both worlds.
- Down for dry, cold conditions. Synthetic when wet weather is likely.
Shell Fabrics & Membranes
The outer fabric that protects your insulation from wind, rain, and abrasion. Modern membranes have moved beyond traditional Gore-Tex.
- Gore-Tex ePE: the latest generation uses expanded polyethylene membranes that are PFAS-free, lighter, and more breathable than older PTFE-based Gore-Tex
- Brand-specific membranes: Pertex Shield, H2No (Patagonia), BD.dry (Black Diamond), AscentShell (Outdoor Research) - all offer comparable performance at lower prices
- Stretch shells: some rain jackets now incorporate stretch for better mobility - a significant comfort upgrade
- Ultralight shells: 7-denier fabrics weigh as little as 4-5 oz but require careful handling
- PFAS-free DWR: the industry is rapidly shifting away from perfluorinated chemicals. Most major brands now offer PFAS-free water-repellent finishes
Hiking Pants & Bottoms
Modern hiking pants have evolved far beyond stiff canvas. Today's designs prioritize stretch, breathability, and versatility.
Key Features
- Articulated knees: pre-shaped patterning for better mobility on steep terrain
- Gusseted crotch: diamond-shaped panel that prevents binding during high steps
- DWR finish: durable water repellent coating sheds light rain and dries quickly
- UPF rating: built-in sun protection (30-50+) without needing chemical treatment
Pant Styles
- Standard: full-length pants for protection from brush, sun, and cold
- Convertible: zip-off legs convert to shorts - versatile for changing conditions
- Roll-up: snap or tab closures let you cuff pants above the knee without zippers
- Softshell: burlier, stretchier fabric for alpine and off-trail use
Fit & Function
Clothing should be snug but not restrictive. Too tight reduces the air insulation between layers. Too loose lets heat escape and catches on branches.
Layering Fit
Each layer should fit over the one beneath it without compressing it. A base layer is snug. A mid layer has room to loft. A shell fits over both without binding.
Adapt to Conditions
Clothing must adapt to changing combinations of four conditions: wet vs. dry, active vs. resting, wind vs. calm, cold vs. warm. Layers let you add or remove insulation as these shift throughout the day.
Additional Pieces
Extremities lose heat fastest. These small pieces make a big difference in comfort and safety.
Head
A significant amount of body heat escapes through the head. A hat is the simplest, most effective warmth upgrade.
- Wool or fleece beanie for cold conditions
- Balaclava or buff for wind and extreme cold
- Wide-brim hat for sun protection in open terrain
- Sun hat with neck cape for desert and high-altitude sun
Hands
Fingers lose dexterity fast in cold. Layer your hand protection the same way you layer your body.
- Liner gloves for light warmth and dexterity
- Insulated gloves or mittens for cold - mittens are warmer than gloves
- Waterproof shell gloves or over-mitts for wet conditions
- Touchscreen-compatible fingertips for using devices without removing gloves
Feet
Your feet work the hardest and take the most abuse. Keep them dry, protected, and blister-free.
- Moisture-wicking hiking socks - wool blends preferred
- Layer socks in cold weather: liner sock plus heavy sock
- Consider vapor barrier liners in extreme cold to keep insulation dry
- Never cotton socks - they retain moisture and cause blisters
Clothing Care
- Wash base layers after each trip - sweat degrades fabric performance over time
- Refresh DWR on shells when they stop beading water - use a wash-in or spray-on treatment. Many brands now offer PFAS-free DWR renewers
- Wash down jackets with down-specific detergent - regular detergent strips natural oils from the down clusters
- Store down garments uncompressed - hanging or loosely folded
- Repair small tears and holes promptly with gear-grade patch material - adhesive repair tape works in the field
- Air out all clothing before packing - damp clothing mildews and smells
- Keep a dedicated dry set of camp clothes - changing at the end of the day keeps your sleep system clean and warm
