Footwear is one of the most consequential gear decisions you will make. Every step puts your body weight - plus the weight of your pack - through your feet. The wrong shoes turn a great trip into a suffering march. The right ones disappear beneath you and let you focus on the trail.
There is no single best option. The right choice depends on terrain, load, distance, and personal preference. What works for a thru-hiker on the Arizona Trail will not be the best pick for a weekend family hike through rocky canyon country. Modern hiking has shifted toward lighter, more versatile options - trail runners and hiking shoes now dominate many trails where heavy boots once ruled.
The key is understanding what each option offers, then matching it to how you actually hike - not how you think you should hike.
Choosing Your Footwear
Five main categories. Each has a purpose. The right choice matches your terrain, your load, and your feet.
Hiking Boots
Ankle support, stiff soles, and durable construction. Built for heavy loads, rough terrain, and long days on uneven ground. Modern boots are lighter than ever - many weigh 1.5-2 lbs per pair instead of the 3+ lb boots of the past.

Trail Runners

Advanced Midsole Foams
Modern foams like supercritical TPU, PEBA, and nitrogen-infused EVA provide more cushioning with less weight. These foams are more responsive and durable than traditional EVA, giving you energy return and long-lasting comfort.
Carbon & Pebax Plates
Many trail runners now feature carbon fiber or Pebax plates embedded in the midsole. These plates add stiffness for stability on rocky terrain and provide a propulsive feel that reduces fatigue on long descents.
Rock Plates
Thin, flexible plates (usually TPU or carbon) positioned under the forefoot protect against sharp rocks and roots. Essential for hiking in rocky terrain like Arizona's mountains and canyons.
Speed Lacing Systems

Modern Outsole Rubber
Vibram Megagrip and brand-specific compounds offer exceptional grip on wet rock, mud, and loose terrain. Deeper lugs (4-6mm) provide better traction in soft conditions; shallower lugs work better on hardpack.
Weight & Durability Tradeoffs

For day hikes and light backpacking, the weight savings of trail runners often outweighs the shorter lifespan. For heavy loads or multi-week trips, boots may be worth the weight penalty.
Fitting Your Footwear
Fit is everything. A shoe that does not fit will cause blisters, hot spots, and pain - no matter how much it cost or how good the reviews are. Take your time and get this right.
Shop in the Afternoon
Feet swell throughout the day. A shoe that fits in the morning will be tight by afternoon. Try footwear on when your feet are at their largest - this is how they will feel on the trail.
Wear Hiking Socks
Bring the socks you actually hike in. Thickness changes fit dramatically. A boot fitted with thin dress socks will not fit the same with a wool hiking sock.
Check Heel and Toe
Your heel should sit snugly with no slippage when you walk. Your toes should have room to wiggle - about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Toes jamming forward on descents cause black toenails.
Walk Before You Buy
Walk around the store for at least 15-20 minutes. If there is a ramp or stairs, use them. Pay attention to pressure points, rubbing, or anything that feels off. A shoe that feels wrong in the store will feel worse at mile eight.
Consider Your Foot Shape
Wide feet? Look for brands like Altra, Topo Athletic, or wide-width options. Narrow feet? Salomon and La Sportiva tend to run narrower. Match the shoe to your foot shape, not just the brand hype.
Size Up for Downhill
If you'll be doing steep descents, consider sizing up a half size. Your toes will slam forward on downhills, and a little extra room prevents black toenails and bruised toes.
Good Socks
Your socks are part of your footwear system. The right pair prevents blisters, manages moisture, and extends the life of your boots.
Material Matters
The fiber your socks are made from determines how they handle moisture, temperature, and friction against your skin.
- Merino wool blends: the gold standard - moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, odor-resistant. Soft and does not itch.
- Synthetic blends: dry fast, wick well, affordable. Good for warm conditions and fast-drying needs.
- Liner socks: thin synthetic socks worn under wool socks to reduce friction and prevent blisters.
- Avoid cotton: retains moisture, causes blisters, and chills your feet. Cotton socks on a long hike are a fast track to misery.
Cushioning & Fit
Sock thickness and fit affect comfort, warmth, and how your footwear feels.
- Light cushion: minimal padding, best for warm weather and well-fitted shoes
- Medium cushion: balanced padding for most conditions and terrain
- Heavy cushion: maximum warmth and protection for cold weather and rough terrain
- Socks should fit snugly without wrinkles - wrinkles create hot spots
- Consider height: crew socks protect ankles from debris and boot rub
Breaking In Your Footwear
New footwear straight out of the box and onto a long trail is a mistake. Breaking in your boots or shoes lets the materials soften, the sole flex, and your feet adjust - all before you are miles from the trailhead. Trail runners and hiking shoes typically need minimal break-in, while leather boots require more time.
Start at home
Wear your new footwear around the house for a few hours each day. Walk on hard floors, climb stairs, and pay attention to any pressure points or rubbing. This is the safest place to discover fit problems.
Short walks
Take your footwear on short walks around the neighborhood or on easy, flat trails. Gradually increase distance over one to two weeks. This lets the sole flex and the upper soften without overloading your feet.
Loaded day hike
Before a multi-day trip, take your footwear on a loaded day hike with the pack weight you will carry. Feet swell under load, and shoes that feel fine unloaded can create hot spots with weight on your back.
Address hot spots early
If you feel rubbing or pressure during break-in, address it before the big trip. Adjust lacing, add insoles, or try different socks. Small adjustments now prevent blisters later.
Footwear Care
- Brush off dirt and debris after every hike - abrasive grit wears down materials
- Dry completely before storing - never put wet boots away. Remove insoles and stuff with newspaper to speed drying
- Condition leather boots regularly to prevent cracking and maintain water resistance
- For synthetic shoes and trail runners: use a soft brush and mild soap. Avoid harsh detergents that break down waterproof membranes
- Replace worn insoles - factory insoles compress over time and lose support. Aftermarket insoles can improve comfort and extend shoe life
- Inspect soles for wear - smooth or delaminating soles lose grip and should be replaced
- Re-waterproof when the upper stops beading water - use a treatment appropriate for the material (Nikwax, Grangers, or brand-specific products)
- For trail runners: rotate between two pairs if you hike frequently. Letting shoes rest between trips extends their life and lets them dry completely
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight - UV degrades synthetic materials and rubber
Sustainability in Footwear
The footwear industry is shifting toward more sustainable practices. Here's what to look for:
Recycled Materials
Many brands now use recycled polyester, nylon, and rubber in uppers and outsoles. Look for shoes made with post-consumer waste or recycled content.
PFAS-Free DWR
The industry is moving away from PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in waterproof treatments. Many brands now offer PFAS-free DWR that performs nearly as well without the environmental concerns.
Repair Programs
Some brands (like Danner and Lowa) offer resoling and repair services that extend boot life by years. This is more sustainable - and often cheaper - than buying new boots.
Durability as Sustainability
The most sustainable shoe is one that lasts. Investing in quality footwear that you'll actually wear for years is more eco-friendly than cycling through cheap shoes that wear out quickly.
