Shelter
If choosing a backpack felt challenging, selecting a shelter will take it to the next level.
Not only are there different types of shelter, there are different styles and models within each type. Tents, trekking pole shelters, tarps, hammocks, and bivy sacks - and within the tent category alone there are 3-season and 4-season, double-wall and single-wall, freestanding, semi-freestanding, and stake-dependent.
Everyone has an opinion on which is best. Most experienced hikers realize that no single option is best for all conditions. A bivy bag will not help you on a mountaineering trek, and a 4-season expedition tent is overkill on a weekend trip.
Modern fabric technology has transformed what is possible. A decade ago, a 3-pound two-person tent was cutting edge. Today, ultralight designs like the Zpacks Duplex Pro weigh just 1 lb 3.5 oz, and mainstream options like the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 deliver full-featured comfort at 3 pounds flat. The options have never been better - or more confusing.
If you are selecting your first shelter, consider the type of trips you will do most. Your primary factors should be cost, weight, and floor space. For most people starting out, a tent is the right answer.
Five Main Options
Each shelter type has tradeoffs. The right choice depends on your trips, your kit, and your comfort with exposure.
Tents
Typical weight (2P): 3-5+ lbs
The most common choice. Look for 3-season tents with good ventilation. Freestanding models are easiest to pitch and can be moved after setup - useful on rocky ground where stakes will not hold. Semi-freestanding designs (hubbed poles with guy-out points) offer a lighter middle ground and are now the most popular category among backpackers.
- Freestanding vs. semi-freestanding vs. stake-dependent: freestanding pitches anywhere; semi-freestanding needs stakes for full shape but can be partially moved; stake-dependent is lightest but needs solid ground
- Double-wall vs. single-wall: double-wall manages condensation better; single-wall is lighter and faster to pitch
- Bathtub floors: the floor material wraps up the sides to keep water out - standard on quality tents
- Entry style: side entry for easy access; front entry for vestibule storage
- Vestibules: covered space outside the tent door for wet gear, boots, and packs
- Two doors and vestibules: now standard on most 2P+ tents - a major quality-of-life feature for couples
- Size and weight: a "2-person" tent is tight for two - consider sizing up for comfort
Trekking Pole Shelters
Typical weight (2P): 1-2.5 lbs
The fastest-growing shelter category. These use your trekking poles as the support structure, eliminating the need for separate tent poles entirely. Designs range from simple A-frame bivies to roomy double-wall shelters like the Durston X-Mid 2 and Zpacks Duplex Pro. Many are now fully featured with two doors, vestibules, and bathtub floors.

- Eliminates redundant weight if you already carry trekking poles
- Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF) models are waterproof and sag-resistant
- Silpoly (silicone-treated polyester) models offer great value with minimal sag
- Require a good stake job - practice pitching before your trip
- Best for hikers who prioritize weight savings and have some experience
Tarps
Typical weight: 6 oz - 1.5 lbs
Light and versatile. Requires skill and weather awareness. A tarp can be pitched a dozen different ways to match the wind, rain, and terrain - but you need to know how.
- Poncho vs. dedicated tarp: a poncho tarp doubles as rain gear; a dedicated tarp offers more coverage
- Materials: silnylon is lightweight and affordable; DCF (Dyneema) is ultralight and expensive
- Combine with a bug net or bivy for full protection
- Requires trekking poles or trees for pitching
- Best for experienced hikers who read weather well
Hammocks
Typical weight (full system): 2-4 lbs
Comfortable and compact. Sleep above the ground, off rocks, roots, and puddles. But you need trees - and insulation underneath, because hanging compresses your bag and kills its loft.
- Requires trees spaced at the right distance
- Needs an underquilt or pad for insulation - sleeping bags do not work well underneath
- Integrated bug net is essential in most conditions
- Rain fly is mandatory - a tarp above the hammock
- Great for comfort, but limits where you can camp
Bivy Sacks
Typical weight: 1-2 lbs
Minimalist, single-person shelter. Essentially a waterproof-breathable cover for your sleeping bag. Great for weight savings but can feel cramped. The lightest option that still provides weather protection. Modern bivies have evolved - some now include a small hoop at the head for face room and integrated bug netting.
- Lightest and most compact shelter option
- No room to sit up, change clothes, or wait out a storm
- Condensation is the biggest challenge
- Best for solo hikers with minimal gear
- Pair with a tarp for a light, fast shelter system
- Some models now feature small hoops for more headroom
Modern Fabrics & Materials
Shelter fabric technology has advanced significantly. Understanding the options helps you make a smarter purchase:
High-Performance Fabrics
- Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF): The gold standard for ultralight shelters - waterproof, sag-resistant, and incredibly light. Used in premium trekking pole tents. Does not degrade or lose waterproofness over time
- Osmo (Nemo): A poly-nylon blend that stretches less than nylon when wet, offering superior weather tightness without the sag of traditional silnylon
- Silpoly: Silicone-treated polyester - combines the waterproofing of silicone with polyester's natural resistance to sagging. Excellent value
Traditional Fabrics
- Silnylon: Silicone-coated nylon - lightweight and affordable, but tends to sag when wet and requires re-tensioning
- Ripstop nylon (PU-coated): Reliable and widely used in mid-range tents. Heavier but more durable. Denier (D) rating indicates thickness
- Solution-dyed fabrics: Color is added at the fiber level rather than dyed later, reducing water waste and improving UV resistance. Increasingly common from brands like Big Agnes
Higher-denier fabrics (40D+) are more durable but heavier. Many modern tents use a mix - heavier fabric on the floor and lighter fabric on the canopy to save weight where it matters.
Key Decisions
Once you know which type appeals to you, these are the details that separate a good shelter from the right shelter.
Weight vs. Livability
A lighter shelter is a better shelter on your back, but a cramped shelter is miserable at camp. Decide how much space you need to be comfortable, then find the lightest option that meets that bar.
3-Season vs. 4-Season
3-season tents handle spring, summer, and fall. 4-season tents handle snow and high winds. Unless you are winter camping, 3-season is the right call - and it will be lighter. All-season options like the MSR Access 2 bridge the gap for shoulder-season use.
Ventilation
Condensation is the enemy of any shelter. Good airflow keeps you dry from the inside. Look for mesh panels, adjustable vents, and designs that promote cross-breeze. Double-wall designs handle condensation best.
Ease of Pitching
Practice at home before you need it in the dark. A shelter you can pitch quickly and confidently is worth more than one that saves two ounces but requires a manual. Color-coded clips and intuitive designs make a real difference.
Do You Need a Footprint?
A footprint (ground cloth) protects your tent floor from abrasion and adds a waterproof layer. For ultralight tents with thin floors (15D or less), a footprint is strongly recommended. For heavier tents with burly floors (40D+), it is optional but extends the tent's life.
Sustainability
Many top brands now use PFAS-free DWR finishes, solution-dyed fabrics, and recycled materials. Big Agnes, Nemo, and MSR have all made significant sustainability commitments. If this matters to you, check manufacturer specs before buying.
Shelter Care
- Dry completely before storing - mildew destroys fabric fast
- Repair holes and tears promptly with gear-grade tape or seam sealer - DCF shelters can be patched with adhesive DCF repair tape in the field
- Reseal seams annually on nylon and polyester tents, especially on tent floors and rain flies. Note: DCF shelters do not require seam sealing as the fabric itself is waterproof
- Store loosely - not stuffed tight in its sack for months
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure when not in use - UV degrades fabric, especially thin ultralight materials
- Follow manufacturer care instructions for your specific fabric - DCF, silnylon, silpoly, and PU-coated nylon all have different maintenance requirements
