Sleep

A good night in the backcountry starts with the right sleep system - bag or quilt, pad, and ground protection.

Your sleep system is three things working together: a sleeping bag or quilt, a pad for insulation and comfort, and ground protection. Get one wrong and the other two cannot do their job.

A sleeping bag rated for cold weather will not keep you warm on cold ground - the ground steals heat faster than air. A pad without ground protection can puncture on rocks or roots, leaving you sleeping on bare earth. These pieces work as a system.

Modern sleep systems have evolved dramatically. Today's premium down bags weigh under 2 pounds and compress to the size of a water bottle. Quilts - open-back designs that wrap around your pad - have become mainstream among ultralight backpackers. And sleeping pads now feature advanced baffling and reflective insulation that would have been science fiction a decade ago.

Start with the conditions you will face most often, then build your sleep system around them. Temperature, terrain, and personal comfort preferences all matter.

Sleeping Bags & Quilts

The core of your sleep system. The right bag or quilt keeps you warm without adding unnecessary weight or bulk.

Fill Types

The insulation inside your bag determines its weight, compressibility, and performance when wet.

  • Down: lightweight, highly compressible, excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. Modern down is rated by fill power (650-950+), with higher numbers indicating better loft and warmth per ounce. Loses insulation when wet unless treated with hydrophobic coating.
  • Synthetic: retains warmth when wet, dries faster, less expensive. Heavier and bulkier than down for the same warmth. Best for wet environments or budget-conscious buyers.
  • Hydrophobic down: down treated with a water-repellent coating that resists moisture absorption. Combines down's warmth-to-weight advantage with better wet-weather performance. Now standard on most premium bags.

Shapes & Styles

Bag shape affects warmth, weight, and how much room you have to move.

  • Mummy: snug fit, maximizes warmth, minimizes weight. Best for cold conditions and efficient packing.
  • Spoon-shaped: roomier than mummy, especially at elbows and knees. Great for side-sleepers and those who move at night. Slightly heavier.
  • Rectangular: roomiest, most comfortable for those who need space. Heaviest and least warm.
  • Quilts: open-back designs that wrap around your pad. Lighter and more packable than bags with equivalent warmth. Require a pad with good R-value. Popular among ultralight backpackers. No hood or zipper on most models.

Temperature Ratings

Modern bags use ISO or EN testing standards for consistent, comparable ratings.

  • Comfort rating: the temperature at which a typical sleeper feels warm. Use this as your primary guide. Most bags now list both comfort and lower limit ratings.
  • Lower limit: the lowest temperature at which the bag might keep you from hypothermia. Not a comfort measure.
  • Choose based on the coldest temperature you expect to face, not the average.
  • Side-sleepers and cold-sleepers should size up or add a liner for extra warmth.
  • Most 3-season backpackers need a bag rated 15-30°F for versatility across seasons.

Modern Features

Today's bags offer features that would have been unheard of a decade ago.

  • Zippered vents: some bags feature lengthwise vents that create intentional cold spots for temperature regulation in warm conditions.
  • Draft collars: insulated tubes at the neck that seal in warmth and block cold air.
  • Pillow pockets: built-in sleeves to hold your camp pillow in place.
  • Anti-snag zippers: smooth-operation zippers that won't catch on fabric.
  • Differential cut: the shell is cut larger than the liner to allow down to loft fully without compression.

Sleep Layering

What you wear to sleep matters as much as the bag you sleep in. Clean, dry layers trap warmth and keep moisture away from your skin.

Base Layers

Wear clean, dry thermal base layers to bed. Synthetic or wool - never cotton. A fresh base layer traps warmth and wicks moisture from the day's sweat.

Add Warmth

Add a warm hat and dry socks if needed. A hat prevents significant heat loss. Dry socks keep feet warm and protect the bag's footbox from moisture.

Avoid Overdressing

Too many layers compress the bag's insulation and reduce its effectiveness. The bag is designed to trap your body heat - let it work.

Personal Comfort

Side-sleepers may need a thicker pad or different bag shape. Cold-sleepers should consider a lower temperature rating or a bag liner for extra warmth.

Sleeping Pads

A pad is not just for comfort - it insulates you from the ground. Without one, the ground will drain your body heat faster than cold air. R-value measures a pad's thermal resistance.

Air Pads

The most popular choice for backpacking. Lightweight, packable, and comfortable. Modern designs use reflective insulation and advanced baffling for warmth without bulk.

  • Lightest and most packable option
  • R-values from 2.0 (summer) to 8.5+ (winter)
  • Thickness ranges from 2.5" to 4.6" for comfort
  • Can puncture - carry a repair kit
  • Require inflation by mouth or pump sack

Self-Inflating Pads

Open-cell foam inside expands when you open the valve, pulling in air. You top it off with a few breaths. A balance of comfort, insulation, and convenience.

  • Good R-value for insulation from cold ground
  • Comfortable for most sleeping positions
  • Packs down smaller than foam pads
  • Can puncture - carry a repair kit
  • Heavier than air pads

Foam Pads

Lightweight, durable, and simple. Closed-cell foam cannot puncture and provides insulation even if compressed. The tradeoff is bulk and less comfort.

  • Cannot puncture or leak - no repair needed
  • Insulates even when compressed against rocks or roots
  • Lightest option by far
  • Bulkier than air pads
  • Less comfortable for side-sleepers

Understanding R-Value

R-value measures a pad's thermal resistance - its ability to insulate you from cold ground. Higher R-values mean more warmth. The right R-value depends on your conditions:

R-Value Guidelines

  • 1.0-2.0: Summer use only, warm conditions
  • 2.0-3.5: 3-season use, spring through fall
  • 3.5-5.0: Cool weather and shoulder seasons
  • 5.0+: Winter camping and cold conditions

Stacking Pads

You can stack a foam pad under an air pad for extra warmth in winter. The R-values add together. A foam pad also protects your air pad from punctures on rough ground.

Ground Protection

Ground protection keeps your sleep system dry and safe from punctures. Options depend on your shelter type:

Under Your Pad

For tent camping, a tent footprint (sized to match your tent floor) protects both your tent floor and pad. For tarp or bivy setups, a ground sheet larger than your pad provides moisture and puncture protection.

Material Choices

Polyethylene is cheap and durable. Tyvek is lightweight and tough. Polycryo is ultralight but less durable. DCF (Dyneema) is the lightest and most durable option for ultralight setups.

Size Matters

For tent footprints, cut slightly smaller than your tent floor. If it extends beyond the tent, it catches rain and channels it under your floor. For ground sheets under tarps, extend 6-12 inches beyond your pad on all sides.

Moisture Protection

Ground moisture wicks through tent floors and pads. A barrier creates protection that keeps your sleep system dry, even on damp ground or morning dew.

Sleep System Care

  • Air out your sleeping bag after every trip - hang it or lay it flat before storing
  • Store your bag uncompressed - hanging or in a large mesh sack, never stuffed tight
  • Use a liner to keep the bag clean and extend time between washes
  • Wash your bag gently when dirty - follow the manufacturer's instructions for down or synthetic. Use down-specific detergent for down bags.
  • Check your pad for leaks before each trip - inflate and listen for hissing
  • Repair pad punctures promptly with gear-grade patch material
  • Keep your ground sheet clean and dry - brush off debris and store without moisture
  • Inspect all seams and zippers before extended trips - small problems become big ones in the backcountry
