Water

In the backcountry, water planning is survival planning. Sources can be unreliable, and needs scale with effort, heat, and altitude.

Water is the one resource you cannot afford to run short on. A person can go days without food but only hours without water in hot, dry conditions - and Arizona has plenty of both. Every trip demands a plan for how much you need, where you will get it, and how you will treat it.

Your water system has three parts: storage (how you carry it), treatment (how you make it safe), and planning (how you match supply to demand). Get any one of these wrong and the others cannot compensate.

In Arizona especially, water sources are seasonal, intermittent, and sometimes miles apart. Knowing your sources before you go - and having backups planned - is not optional. Modern tools like the FarOut app (formerly Guthook) provide crowd-sourced water source reports that can make the difference between a safe trip and a dangerous one.

Water Storage

A combination of bottles and collapsible containers gives you flexibility. Most hikers carry 2-4 liters, but Arizona's dry stretches may demand 5-6 liters or more between reliable sources.

Hard Bottles

Durable, reusable, and easy to clean. Hard bottles handle hot water, do not retain flavors, and last for years. Nalgene's wide-mouth bottles are the standard for durability, while lighter options like the Nalgene Sustain use recycled materials.

Collapsible Bladders & Reservoirs

Lightweight and packable. Bladders collapse as you drink, saving space. Most hydration packs use a bladder with a tube for hands-free sipping on the move. Modern reservoirs from CNOC, HydraPak, and Platypus offer improved durability and easier cleaning.

Soft Bottles

The thru-hiker standard. Flexible, lightweight, and easy to refill. Smartwater bottles (1L) are the iconic choice - cheap, durable, and compatible with most squeeze filters. Hydrapak Soft Flasks come in 500mL and 600mL sizes for running vests.

Capacity Planning

How much water you carry depends on distance between sources, temperature, effort, and your personal needs. Underestimate and you risk dehydration. Over-carry and you waste energy hauling weight.

  • 2 liters: minimum for short day hikes with reliable water sources
  • 3-4 liters: standard for full-day hikes in moderate heat
  • 4-6 liters: dry sections, high heat, or long distances between sources
  • 6+ liters: Arizona desert crossings in summer - plan carefully
  • In Arizona heat (100°F+), you may drink 1 liter per hour under exertion
  • Always carry more than you think you need - conditions change

Water Treatment

Backcountry water looks clean but can carry giardia, cryptosporidium, bacteria, and viruses. Treating every drop is non-negotiable - a single sip of contaminated water can end your trip and send you to the hospital. Modern squeeze filters have revolutionized backcountry water treatment - they are lighter, faster, and simpler than older pump designs.

Filter vs. Purifier: Know the Difference

A filter removes protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium) and bacteria (E. coli, salmonella) but not viruses. A purifier removes all three, including viruses. For Arizona's backcountry, a filter is sufficient - viruses are primarily a concern in developing countries or areas with heavy human waste contamination. If you travel internationally, you will need a purifier.

Squeeze Filters (Most Popular)

The modern standard. Fill a soft bottle with dirty water and squeeze it through a hollow fiber membrane. Weighs 2-3 oz, filters 1,000-100,000 liters depending on model. Top picks: Sawyer Squeeze ($46, lifetime filter life), HydraPak 42mm Filter Cap ($40, 1,500L), LifeStraw Peak Squeeze ($44, 2,000L), Platypus QuickDraw ($55, 1,000L). Can also be used inline with hydration bladders or as gravity setups.

Gravity Filters (Best for Groups)

Hang a dirty water bag above a clean bag and let gravity do the work. No pumping, no squeezing. Filters 1.5-4 liters per minute. Platypus GravityWorks 4L ($135) and MSR AutoFlow XL ($140) are the standards. Ideal for basecamping and groups of 2+. Heavier (11-12 oz) but effortless to use.

Bottle Filters (Easiest to Use)

Filter caps that screw onto standard bottles. Platypus DayCap ($50) fits Nalgene, Hydro Flask, and Yeti wide-mouth bottles - fill from a source, screw on the cap, and drink. LifeStraw Go and similar bottles have built-in filters. Convenient but slower flow rates and shorter filter life than squeeze filters.

Chemical Treatment (Ultralight Backup)

Chlorine dioxide tablets (Katadyn Micropur MP1, $18/30 tabs) or liquid drops (Aquamira, $15) kill bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Weighs less than 1 oz. Takes 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on the pathogen. Excellent backup to a filter - covers viruses that filters miss. Leaves a faint chemical taste.

Pump Filters/Purifiers

Traditional hand-pump designs. Katadyn Hiker ($90) is a reliable filter; MSR Guardian ($400) and LifeSaver Wayfarer ($123) are pump purifiers that also remove viruses. Self-cleaning technology extends filter life. Heavier (10 oz-1 lb) but reliable and works with any water source, including shallow puddles.

Boiling

The oldest and most reliable method. A rolling boil for one minute kills everything - bacteria, viruses, protozoa. Requires fuel, time, and patience. Best as an emergency backup rather than a primary method. At Arizona's altitude, water boils at a lower temperature - add an extra minute above 6,500 feet.

Arizona Water Planning

Arizona's water situation is unlike most hiking destinations. Many trails cross desert terrain with no reliable water for 10-20+ miles. Planning is critical.

Know Your Sources

Study your route before you go. Use the FarOut (formerly Guthook) app for crowd-sourced water source reports - these are updated regularly by other hikers. Many Arizona springs are seasonal and may be dry in summer. Always verify source status within a week of your trip.

Cache Water on Dry Routes

For desert routes with long dry stretches, pre-position water caches at strategic points before your trip. Mark GPS coordinates. Check caches the day before to confirm they are intact. This is standard practice on routes like the Arizona Trail's desert sections.

Drink Before You Are Thirsty

Sip regularly throughout the day rather than gulping large amounts at once. A bladder with a bite valve makes this easy - small sips every 15-20 minutes keep you hydrated without stopping. In Arizona heat, aim for 0.5-1 liter per hour under exertion.

Electrolytes Are Essential

Sweat depletes sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes. In Arizona heat, you can lose liters of sweat per hour. Pack electrolyte supplements (Nuun tablets, Liquid IV, LMNT packets, or salt capsules). Hydration without electrolytes can lead to hyponatremia - a dangerous condition where blood sodium drops too low.

Monitor Output

Clear or light yellow urine means you are hydrated. Dark yellow means you are behind. If you stop urinating, you are in serious trouble and need water immediately. Pay attention to your body's signals - headache, dizziness, and nausea are late-stage dehydration warnings.

Hike During Cooler Hours

In summer, start before dawn and stop hiking by 10 AM. Rest in shade during midday heat (11 AM - 4 PM). Resume in late afternoon. This "siesta strategy" dramatically reduces water needs - you can cut consumption by 30-50% compared to hiking in full sun.

Water System Care

Proper maintenance keeps your water system reliable and safe. A neglected filter can harbor bacteria and make you sick - the opposite of what it is supposed to do.

  • Clean and dry your bladder after every trip - mildew grows fast in damp, dark spaces. Use a bottle brush and mild soap, then hang to dry completely
  • Backflush squeeze filters after each use - push clean water backward through the membrane to clear debris. Sawyer includes a syringe for this; HydraPak and LifeStraw recommend shaking or tapping
  • Never let a hollow fiber filter freeze - frozen water expands and cracks the membrane fibers, destroying filtration. In winter, carry your filter inside your jacket or sleeping bag
  • Replace filter cartridges on schedule - an expired filter does not protect you. Check manufacturer ratings (Sawyer Squeeze: lifetime, HydraPak: 1,500L, Katadyn BeFree: 1,000L)
  • Check chemical treatment expiration dates - old tablets lose effectiveness. Store in a cool, dry place
  • Inspect bottles and bladders for cracks, leaks, or worn seals before each trip
  • Carry a backup treatment method - a filter plus chemical tablets covers you if either fails. This combo weighs under 4 oz
  • Never rely on a single water source - always have a plan B for dry or contaminated sources
  • Mark dirty water containers clearly to avoid cross-contamination with clean water
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight - UV degrades plastic bladders and bottles over time

Sustainability & Water Systems

Modern water treatment is inherently more sustainable than the alternatives. A single Sawyer Squeeze replaces thousands of disposable water bottles and eliminates the need for single-use plastic bottles on trail.

Long Filter Life

The Sawyer Squeeze is rated for 100,000 gallons - effectively a lifetime for any hiker. Other squeeze filters last 1,000-2,000 liters. Long filter life means less waste and lower cost per liter of clean water.

Reusable Soft Bottles

Smartwater bottles, CNOC bags, and HydraPak flasks are reusable and recyclable. A $1 Smartwater bottle can last an entire thru-hike (2,000+ miles) with careful use, replacing dozens of disposable bottles.

Chemical Treatment Waste

Chemical tablets have a shelf life and eventually become waste. Plan treatment quantities for your trip rather than stockpiling. Aquamira drops in glass bottles last longer and generate less packaging waste than individual tablet packets.

Leave No Trace at Water Sources

Camp 200 feet from water sources. Do not wash dishes or yourself in streams. Use a collapsible container to carry water to camp. Scatter strained dishwater broadly to minimize impact. Protect the sources that other hikers depend on.
