Route Overview

The Spirit Hot Springs Trail descends through Black Canyon to natural hot springs along the Colorado River below Hoover Dam. The springs emerge from the volcanic rock at approximately 104°F and flow into the river, creating warm pools along the riverbank. The hike passes through dramatic volcanic canyon walls with views of the Colorado River and the surrounding desert landscape.

The trail is accessible from the Arizona side via a dirt road from US-93. The hike is short but steep in sections, with some scrambling required to reach the springs from the river. The springs are a popular destination for kayakers and hikers alike. Summer temperatures make this hike dangerous from May through September - plan for cooler months.

Permits & Regulations

Permit Required: No for day use. Lake Mead NRA entrance fee applies. No swimming in the hot springs pools that feed directly into the river due to a dangerous amoeba. Soaking in the pooled water along the riverbank is common but at your own risk. Carry all water needed - no water sources on the trail.

⚠ Heat Warning

Summer temperatures in Black Canyon regularly exceed 115°F. The trail has minimal shade. Heat stroke is a real danger. Hike only October through April. Carry at least 3 liters of water per person.
